It’s that time of year again! And as always, I had trouble putting together my list of favorite music from this year. Initially, I wasn’t sure again if I even had 50 songs I could list. But once I did start, I instead had trouble trying to keep the list at only 50. lol

How did I put this list together? It’s really just songs I enjoyed, liked or even loved. Usually it’s just a gut feeling. Other times it’s a quantitative measure. (Which songs were on repeat?!) And for many, it’s their staying power on my playlist. Which songs did I love when I first heard them and love them even more now. There might even be songs I wasn’t a fan of on first listen, but months later have accumulated dozens of repeat plays. Then there’s even songs that I might have loved originally, but ended up fading away over time.
So without further ado, here are my 50 Favorite Songs of 2023s!

50. “Rhythm” by Yes My Love

I had been following Yes My Love a bit because some of the members had been from Top Class as well as a familiar few who have appeared on other shows as well. But their debut track “Rhythm” was definitely not what I ever expected from the rookie group. Actually, I don’t even know what kind of style and vibe I was expecting. But “Rhythm” took me by pleasant surprise.

The rookies just ooze charisma with the sexy and flirtatious song. The clever lyrics allow the group to have this great swagger and coolness that is very appealing. The amazing chorus is also so interesting with what I assume is some kind of traditional instrument (sounds like an Indonesian angklung?) adding this really ear-catching quality that you can’t help but be in awe by.

Simply put, this was an amazing debut.

49. “Bet On Me” by ITZY

ITZY’s “Bet on Me” was a pleasant surprise. Coupled with a cinematic music video, this track was a bit of a departure from their releases so far. Instead of the striking, big concept ideas of their recent releases, “Bet on Me” is a subdued, but no less impactful song. Its empowering lyrics talk of finding the confidence to move forward. And the midtempo, though still energetic pop, rock and R&B melody allow for the group to deliver vocal performances that may usually be reserved for their B-side tracks rather than their uniquely creative titles. “Bet on Me” might be different, but it is a welcome arrival for the talented group. Probably their biggest opportunity since debut to really showcase what they are capable of and the full package.

48. “Dive Into” by Han Seung Woo

VICTON’s Han Seung Woo makes his first solo comeback since completing his military service. And “Dive Into” is a perfect track to remind everyone of his talent and charisma. His smooth moves and silky vocals really bring the sensual R&B track to life. The rest of the album Frame has another similar vibe in “Flutter,” some rock-infused tracks like “Runnin’ High,” “Burn” and “Lovelorn” and sweet ballad “End of Dawn.” A strong return for Seung Woo!

47. “Higher” by n.SSign

I looked forward to n.SSign’s official debut. And they definitely did not disappoint. Title track “Higher” is a wonderfully uplifting track with the group’s excellent vocals being supported by a dreamy pop melody. The song expresses the group’s strong will and the cinematic music video completes the ethereal experience.

46. “New Emotions” by INFINITE

Celebrating their 13th anniversary, INFINITE showed exactly why they enjoy that staying power and longevity with their latest album 13egin. Title track “New Emotions” is an attention-grabbing song. Its interesting melody helps to set the stage for a captivating progression that just sucks you into this groovy, sexy track. The members definitely have no problem exuding that charisma and showcasing their experience and talent through their performance. The rest of the album is more opportunity for the group to show their maturity and growth over their 13 years in the industry. Especially tracks “Time Difference” and “I Got You,” both excellent songs that easily could’ve made their way onto my Top 50 list as well.

45. “None of My Business” by ITZY

I’ve been quite meh on many of the recent title tracks from ITZY. I’ve enjoyed more of their B-sides and other album tracks instead. Kill My Doubt‘s title track “Cake” was another one of those “I’m not feeling it” songs for me. I’m sure other people will like it. But I really don’t. I felt the total opposite for their pre-release track “None of My Business,” however. I really liked “Bet On Me,” the first pre-release track of the album. And “None of My Business” just might be one my favorite ITZY songs ever. It was such a pleasant surprise to hear the song and immediately love it. The rhythmic pop song is really the kind of sound I’d love to hear more of from the group.

44. “Favorite” by POW

“Favorite” was definitely a great introduction to rookie group POW. It is an unexpectedly rock-based track that is able to bring about this mature youthfulness. A vibe that contributes to a very appealing nostalgic aura that is able to immediately endear the rookies. The rest of their debut album is great, but “Favorite” really lives up to its title for me from them.

43. “I Want You” by SB19

Though “Gento” stormed the world this past year, “I Want You” and its accompanying music video was absolutely a shocker! It’s wild and crazy. In a good way! The R&B love song is a sensual and captivating track. Something I certainly haven’t heard from SB19. Or really in P-pop in general so far. Absolutely stunning track. I only wish there was a bit of Filipino in it too because that would just take it to a whole other level. But it is easily my favorite track from the group that helped pave the way for today’s P-pop resurgence.

42. “Wonder Land” by SEVENUS

It was great learning that former members of MASC, Heejae and Ireah, were on the reality competition program Peak Time. And not only that, they ended up becoming the runners-up. I enjoyed MASC’s music and it was tough to see the major struggles the group went through over the years. So seeing them do well on Peak Time was really awesome. Now Heejae and Ireah redebut as SEVENUS with the title track “Wonder Land.” The title certainly suits the song with its dreamy, summer vibe. And the lyrics are a great expression of Heejae and Ireah’s resolve as they get another chance to showcase their talents with this new beginning.

The rest of the album Summus contains the instrumental to “Wonder Land” as well as the bright “Summer Ride” and mellow “In a Dream.” Really great album and even more awesome to see Heejae and Ireah get this opportunity.

41. “Calling” by XODIAC

Rookie group XODIAC has had a strong debut year. And their pre-release track “Calling” is what grabbed my initial attention. It is an appealing pop dance track that serves as an excellent introduction to the group. The charismatic performance is infused with the group’s charms. And it was a great taste of what was to come from the full group in their releases in the months after.

40. “HANY” by AJAA

A few months ago, I commented about
Cornerstone Entertainment
potentially being P-pop’s answer to Korea’s traditional “Big 3” companies. Not only have they been able to launch three new P-pop groups in such a short amount of time, those same groups (VXON, G22 and Yes My Love) have released some excellent music!

So it should be no surprise (or maybe it is?) that their newest group AJAA perfectly follows in their sibling groups’ footsteps. It’s a surprise because you may not expect a company to go 4-for-4 in such a short amount of time. But Cornerstone did. And AJAA’s debut track “Hany” is an excellent way to introduce themselves to the public and announce their arrival to the wonderfully growing P-pop scene.

The bright, youthful and fun track offers up the perfect showcase for the four members to show off their talents and personalities. The sweet pop track is immediately catchy with great lyrics that the members are able to glide along with. Nothing feels forced, everything feels breezy and natural. And that’s not always a guarantee with any performance or song. But AJAA definitely delivers here.

I was blown away by Yes My Love’s debut earlier this year. But their little brothers in AJAA certainly stepped up to the plate to match their kuyas, no problem. Two incredibly talented groups. Cornerstone is definitely doing something right! Stay tuned!

39. “Firework” by &TEAM

I regret not having kept up with &TEAM after their debut. Especially when they release songs like “Firework”. The title track of their 2nd mini album, the fast-paced and easily appealing sound supports a positive and adventurous feeling in its lyrics. The fireworks of two people meeting and running forward are perfectly expressed in every part of the song as well as the group’s performance. Lucky for me, the group released First Howling : NOW, a compilation of all their releases so far and through it, I was able to catch up with the group. And I was quite blown away by every song. A unique sound you don’t normally hear with contemporary groups, whether in Korea or Japan.

38. “Eyes on Me” by Hello Gloom

Na Ungjae, also known as HELLO GLOOM, released “Eyes on Me”. And it was another excellent track from the talented artist and the collective The Faker Club. The soulful dance track has a euphoric summer feel. A perfect song that would get you grooving in the club. (Not that I’d know anything about that lol) Or perhaps enjoying the warm on a Philippine beach like HELLO GLOOM does in the song’s music video. Definitely a song to add to your summer playlist.

37. “Full Metal Jacket” by EPEX

One thing you can be sure of with EPEX is that they will release catchy songs. Whether they’re bright pop tracks or powerful, charismatic dance tracks. Earlier this year, the group released the bright “Sunshower.” And they most recently came back with the powerful “Full Metal Jacket.” Powered by an explosive guitar sound and heavy bassline, the group delivers an energetic track that is both memorable and meaningful, expressing the dangers and tragic reality of school violence.

The other three tracks on the album Prelude of Anxiety Chapter 2 – Can We Surrender also compliment the title track very well. “Hit the Wall” is especially fun and matches the vibe and energy of “Full Metal Jacket” perfectly. Another track that could’ve easily made this list as well.

36. “Outlaw” by Bz-Boys

BZ-BOYS release their first mini-album containing all their singles so far and new title track “Outlaw.” Bon, Hamin, Double D and Seunghyun hold down the fort while Taewoong fulfills his military duties. And “Outlaw” is definitely another great song from the group. The sort of Latin-infused dance track is a charismatic and dramatic performance from the talented and underrated group. Definitely hoping they can have more fresh music soon as they prove time and time again with every release they always deliver. More full albums please! They definitely deserve more opportunities to show off their talents.

35. “X.O.X” by Moon Jong Up

I’ve been playing Jongup’s “US” and “Headache” on repeat while waiting for fresh new music from him. And now it’s finally here! New album Some and title track “X.O.X” are such a welcome arrival. And certainly worth the wait. “X.O.X” is definitely the kind of track that allows Jongup to show off his smooth and captivating skills. Always a total performer with his vocals, dance and charisma.

The album opens with a bass-powered midtempo pop track “Stuck,” then “X.O.X,” funky R&B-pop sub-title track “Common” (as well as an English version) and the ethereal pop ballad “Fine” as the closer. An excellent release from Jongup!

34. “Pluto” by Xdinary Heroes

Xdrinary Heroes has seemed to have settled in their own sound and style, which is always captivating and engaging. A wonderful mix of stunning ballads like “Good Enough” or rousing rock anthems like “Break the Brake”. But my favorite from them this year is definitely “Pluto”. An amazing, evocative track that feels at the same time dreamy and emotional. The official MV is wonderful, but the special live performance video really captures the song so well. Might be my favorite track from Xdinary Heroes so far.

33. “Summer Sky” by Henry Lau

“Summer Sky” is a perfect title for this track from Henry Lau. The wonderful Summer track is an excellent mix of nostalgia and fun. The perfect soundtrack for your next summer adventure. The breezy melody and Henry’s always warm vocals come together for an awesome vibe.

32. “Bad Revenge” by from20

Kim Raehwan, or better known as from20, first returned this year with his single “Bad Revenge.” And it’s another “banger,” as he confidently mentions in the track itself. The synth-based melody has a retro, kinetic energy that makes it an easily appealing track. from20 sings of coming to terms with a relationship that’s come to end and all the feelings that bubble up in the process.

31. “Trust Yourself” by Jeong Inseong

After completing his service to the country, KNK’s Jeong Inseong released his first solo single “Trust Yourself”. The midtempo pop single is a wonderfully encouraging song that shares that everything will indeed be okay. It is so great to be able to hear Inseong’s voice once again. And even though his vocal power was always on display in KNK’s songs, Inseong delivers a perfectly reserved and effortless performance here. Which is well suited to the message of the song. Looking forward for more from Inseong. And KNK as well!

30. “Overdrive” by WEi

What a joy of a title track from WEi! “Overdrive” is a perfect summer song. But it’s just great vibes all around that transcends the season. The bright music video filmed in the Philippines definitely sets the mood of a fun adventure with people you care about. The chorus is one of the most catchy refrains this year. (I think the TikTok dance previews definitely played a part in that lol) But you also can’t help but dance along whenever you hear it as well.

29. “Wonder” by ASHISLAND

If you have not heard of rapper ASH ISLAND yet, his latest album Rose will be a great introduction. I first learned of him when he collaborated with HA:TFELT on the song “Satellite,” one of my favorite songs from Park Yeeun. I’ve followed his music from time to time since then. “Wonder” is a feel-good track that has an excellent vibe and one I immediately liked. A track to add to your summer playlist. And a #NightDrive candidate too

28. “Chasing That Feeling” by TOMORROW X TOGETHER

I haven’t been a big fan of TXT’s last two title tracks. The group always delivers impactful performances, but I haven’t necessarily added any of their recent music to my repeat playlist. “Chasing That Feeling” might change that as the synth-infused pop track feels so refreshing in many ways. First, as a different sound from TXT’s recent releases. And second, because it sounds like an actual song and not necessarily made specifically so it can trend on TikTok’s For You Page for a few weeks. (Which is what a lot of songs sound like lately.) The song reminds me a lot of TXT’s earlier music with an obvious step forward as well. So it makes me really appreciate and enjoy the track.

27. “Overdrive” by I.M

I.M made a stunning solo comeback with the album Overdrive. The first release after signing with Sony Music signals the start of full-fledge solo promotions. And the album and title track of the same name couldn’t be an any more perfect way for him to step out and announce his arrival. Of course, he has already shown off his many talents as a member of MONSTA X and his first solo release under Starship. But Overdrive, the title track and entire album specifically, really is an opportunity for him to showcase his own unique style. And of course his multi-faceted talent. The album is a diverse mix of sound, woven together by an almost ethereal aura about them. The six songs tell an almost dreamlike story, with I.M effortlessly expressing interesting emotions through the lyrics, music and performance. Really an excellent album and will probably be one of my absolute favorites of the year.

26. “10 Things” by INI

INI’s “Hana” was a great title track, a soaring and melodic chorus gave the group an opportunity to show off a different side of themselves. But the B-side track of this album “10 Things” was equally amazing. The synth-infused track is a sweet and energetic pop song. And again, something different from the talented group.

25. “Thinking About You” by Brooklyn Juliana

Brooklyn Juliana has released some great music and it’s always a treat to see and hear fresh music from him. And I say “see” because the accompanying music video for “Thinking About You,” directed by Brooklyn himself, is as much a captivating experience as listening to the track is. The alternative and electronic-infused pop-rock track captures the feelings of the start of a dreamy summertime romance. The melody itself has a wonderful sense of nostalgia while Brooklyn’s vocals perfectly express the shy, romantic feelings of the lyrics. Another great release from him!

24. “Blue” by XEED

I enjoyed XEED’s solid debut last December and was happy to hear about them making their first official comeback. But I was even more excited hearing that Kwon Yonghyeon, formerly of TST, was joining the group. He is one of two new members joining the rookie group. And their first release as a quintet definitely delivers. “Blue,” the title track of the album of the same name, is such a pleasant surprise. The light, tropical sound of the track with its synth-infused melody and hopeful message is a bit different from their debut title. But it is nonetheless an irresistible song and performance with its dreamlike aura an immediate charmer.

23. “Feel Me” by Golden Child

Could this be my favorite Golden Child title track ever? The nostalgic vibes of “Feel Me” are immediately irresistible. The conflicted feelings of youth and friendships are effortlessly expressed through the group’s vocals and performance. Not only that, but the second track on the single album “Blind Love” is also another great track. And another one that just missed my top list this year.

22. “Beat It” by from20

After “Bad Revenge,” from20 had another amazing track. The synth-infused “Beat It” is a rousing and energetic anthem that has from20 singing personal lyrics about his journey as an all-around artist and creative mind on the rough road that the music industry can be. It’s a positive and encouraging song where from20’s confidence pairs perfectly with his obvious talent to result in a catchy and immediately repeatable track. Kim Rae Hwan, aka from20, always delivers with every track.

21. “Journey” by WOODZ

Cho Seungyoun has really released some incredible music as soloist WOODZ. He previewed this new album with the great pre-release track “Abyss.” But I don’t know that anyone would be prepared for the release of title track “Journey.” It is a stunning pop-rock ballad with WOODZ singing personal, emotional lyrics backed by a soaring melody and climaxing with the support of a chorus of vocals. All highlighting WOODZ’s own vocal performance that really has him delivering a passionate interpretation of the words he himself has written and composed for the track. Simply breathtaking.

20. “I Need Love” by DKB

Fresh off of a strong run on the reality competition Peak Time, DKB made their first comeback of the year with the excellent “I Need Love.” The title track is a very appealing house pop track with a relatable hopeful message. It’s a great mix that offers the opportunity for DKB to reintroduce themselves to new fans as well as excite longtime fans as well.

19. “Gonna Be Alright” by VIXX

VIXX’s Hyuk, Leo and Ken made a full comeback a couple of weeks ago. But my favorite release from them this year is the wonderful “Gonna Be Alright.” The midtempo R&B track is a warm and hopeful song. One that’s perfect for the trio’s harmonious vocals. It was a great way to start the year off with and it’s been on repeat for me since then.

18. “Save Me, Kill Me” by CIX

I was speechless as the music video for CIX’s latest comeback title track started. I don’t know if it was common knowledge for all the CIX fans out there, but I had no idea the MV for “Save Me, Kill Me” would call back to the group’s excellent (and very emotional!) Hello, Strange Place short film/series. If I remember correctly, that series was in preparation for their first comeback after debut. And I thought it was an amazing creative offering for a rookie group.

So now fast forward to three years later in the present day and the “Save Me, Kill Me” music video picks up right where the story film left off. A perfect dramatic depiction of the song’s emotional, meaningful lyrics. The song is really a great reminder of the group’s versatility. Being able to deliver powerful tracks like this while also doling out catchy pop dance tracks.

17. “Predator” by Lee Gikwang

One of my #UltimateBiases delivered an amazing album this year. Though I of course expected that! Title track “Predator” is an absolutely captivating song. The atmospheric synth-infused dance track has Gikwang exuding that sexiness and charisma while bringing the dramatic lyrics to life with his impactful performance.

16. “Sage” by FTISLAND

An absolutely incredible track. But I mean, you expect nothing less from FTISLAND. It is so awesome to have them back with some fresh music. And “Sage” is definitely worth the wait. The title track of their new album of the same name is just stunning. The soaring rock track is powered by Minhwan’s strong drums and Hongki and Jaejin’s strong vocals. Just an amazing musical experience from one of the best in the industry.

The other five tracks on the album follow suit with the three members all involved in every one of them. Certainly one of the strongest albums of the year. And one of my absolute favorite tracks of the year too with “Sage.”

15. “Moonlight” by Henry Lau

It’s always great to have new music from Mr. Henry Lau. And “Moonlight” is a wonderful track. It has definitely been on my #NightDrive Playlist since its release. The indie pop song has a catchy guitar melody that suits those night drives down the freeway, but still has an upbeat vibe. The message of the lyrics is also great about letting go of your worries and staying positive. I definitely need a full album from Henry soon!

14. “Fantasy” by TRENDZ

I loved TRENDZ’s New Dayz and it easily could’ve made my Top 50 list this year. But “Fantasy” is my favorite track from them this year and definitely one of my most played of the year overall too. This dreamy track from TRENDZ was a wonderful surprise. Just an absolute vibe of a track. Its chorus is just beautiful. And the lyrics express a meaningful message. A must-listen.

13. “Heaven on Earth” by Hello Gloom

Na Ungjae aka HELLO GLOOM came back with a third release this year with another excellent vibe of a song. “Heaven on Earth” is a pop-R&B track that allows for another irresistible performance from the talented multi-hyphenate artist. Words cannot express the song that you just have to experience and allow it to whisk you away.

Check out this “Heaven Ver.” Live clip as well:
https://youtu.be/J032ct7YhRQ

12. “On My Way” by KINGDOM

When I first heard the instrumental in TikTok teasers on the group’s official account, I already knew I would love the track. And once I listened to it in full, I definitely confirmed it. KINGDOM’s “On My Way” is an energetic pop-dance track has a perfect vibe and a sound you can’t help but enjoy.

11. “One Look” by Leo

Former Trainee A member Leo makes his solo debut with “One Look”. I did not follow Trainee A, but this R&B-pop track is an excellent introduction to this Korean-Australian artist. Leo delivers a very charismatic and charming performance for this addictive summer vibe of a track. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on him.

10. “Yayakapin” by Yes My Love

I really loved Yes My Love’s debut track “Rhythm” earlier this year. And it’s definitely secured a spot on my year-end favorites list. But I’ve been really out of the loop on their follow-up releases, which is definitely on me. So thank goodness I’ve finally actually used the Googles and learned that they’ve released two new tracks since then. No music videos though, which, come on Cornerstone! These two amazing tracks and no MVs?

Because WOWOWOW. “Yayakapin” is AMAZING. Thank goodness I finally listened to this song before finalizing my year-end list. Because hello last minute entry! This wonderful vibe of a track allows the talented group to show off a more laid-back, softer side of themselves. Especially sandwiched between “Rhythm” and “Light Up”. Very much a modern Filipino pop ballad, it’s just the perfect blend of traditional OPM and the ever growing P-pop genre.

And check out this stripped-down performance too!
https://youtu.be/lURLOhLh0rM

I am certainly hoping Cornerstone has them releasing more music soon!

9. “Runnin’ To You” by Yoon Seonbin

Yoon Seobin released a great summery track in “Love is Like a Wave”. But my favorite song from his is definitely the B-side track “Runnin’ To You”. The pop-rock track has a great bit of homey nostalgia. A song that evokes the fleeting moments of a movie-worthy teenage romance. And Yoon Seobin delivers a performance that perfectly captures the appealing vibe.

8. “Walang Hanggan” by ALAMAT

ALAMAT’s “Walang Hanggan” is absolutely breathtaking. From the very first plucks of the bandurria strings at the start to the R&B beat and melody all the way to the violin-backed climax; the six members of ALAMAT lead you through a poignant reflection. The group’s vocals perfectly capture the relatable lyrics and convey a heartfelt sincerity that give the song an extra affecting layer of emotion. One of the group’s best, no question.

7. “Effortless” by A.C.E

A.C.E definitely said “Hold on a minute, we’ve got a song for your year-end lists!” with the release of “Effortless”! This pre-release track by the group ahead of their first album post-military service (save for Chan who is still serving) is an amazing vibe of a track. The group’s vocals compliment the song’s powerful beat and together make it the perfect song to add to your Night Drive playlist. If this is indicative of the rest of the album, it is surely going to be an excellent release. But that’s to be expected from this talented group.

6. “Sorry’s Never Enough” by Corbyn

Corbyn is such an amazing talent. #UltimateBias, no question. And it was so exciting to first hear that he would finally be releasing an album this year. “Cold” and “Burn” were two of my Top 10 tracks of 2022. And the next track off the album “Sorry’s Never Enough” was of course sure to be Top 10 material again. A bit more uptempo than “Cold” and “Burn,” “Sorry’s Never Enough” is nonetheless as passionate a performance. The bittersweet lyrics again are perfectly expressed through Corbyn’s emotive vocals along with a pop-rock-tinged melody that adds to the conflicted feelings of the song. And being the last track to be released before the full release of OSS, it definitely raised the excitement and anticipation even more.

5. “Alright” by Ha Hyun Sang

This track from the soundtrack of tvN drama series Crash Course in Romance (일타 스캔들) is just beautiful. Ha Hyunsang’s soft, yet powerful vocals glide across this emotional British rock track. Just a dreamy and romantic song that sweeps you away into your own K-drama-worthy world.

4. “note to self” by Jung Yonghwa

Jung Yonghwa’s Your City, both the album and title track of the same name, is absolutely amazing. A great album. But my favorite track is most definitely the captivating “note to self”. The emotional guitar-powered alternative pop song is a beautiful track about lifting yourself up after another day of life. Really one of the most stunning tracks from this year for me.

3. “Told You”/”All Yours” by DKB

https://youtu.be/-LD_R3WGzyU

You can read about my amusing experience with DKB’s “Told You” and “All Yours” here. But long story short, after my initial confusion, I fell in love with both the English and Korean version of the track. A combination of dreamy nostalgia and good ol’ synth-infused pop; DKB effortlessly delivered once again. And it has been on repeat for me ever since.

Also, I’m not too keen of the post-bridge lines of “Told You,” so I tried to switch them out for the first post-bridge chorus of “All Yours” instead. And this is the result! 😊

2. “I’m Not You” by Lee Gikwang

“I’m Not You” is my absolute favorite track off Gikwang’s album Predator. The alternative pop track is an emotional confession after the end of a relationship. And Gikwang’s vocals glide across the melody for a passionate performance. I definitely hope he will be able to perform it live as it really has the makings of a breathtaking showcase for Gikwang. I love it so much. That’s my #UltimateBias for ya!

1. “Brainwave” by Corbyn

Corbyn with my #1 track? Not a surprise to me! It was my #1 at the halfway mark of the year. And it’s held on all year to finally have Corbyn take my top spot. I’ve always had Corbyn’s tracks in my yearly Top 10. His music is just amazing.

This dreamy, romantic track is the kind of song I know I will never get tired of. #NightDrivePlaylist approved, most definitely (as is most of Corbyn’s tracks, to be honest). But I feel like the song is the best mix of everything Corbyn does with his music. A catchy melody, meaningful lyrics and a definite mood maker. And it has basically been on a loop for me all year long.

My Top 10 Favorite Korean Dramas of 2022!

In previous years since I was able to watch many more K-Dramas during COVID in 2020. I was able to list my Top 20 shows every year with a couple of extra just outside of the Top 20.

In 2023, I was barely able to watch 20 dramas (22 to be exact). Real life really caught up with me this year so I sadly wasn’t able to watch as many K-dramas as I did in the past. Even worse, a couple of the 22 dramas I did watch ended up being disappointments!

Nonetheless, I highly recommend these ten dramas from 2023!

10. Payback

Payback was an excellent series to start off 2023 with. Its tight storytelling allows for a fast-paced and thoroughly engaging time. Being focused and avoiding unnecessary distractions allows for the story to seamlessly unfold. And that in turn allows for an excellent cast to bring interesting characters to vivid life for a truly character-driven narrative about money, power and revenge.

9. Bloodhounds

Woo Do Hwan and Lee Sang Yi are charismatic and captivating leading men as two boxers who get caught up in the dark and violent world of underground money lending. A strong mix of personal, character-driven stories and exciting, pulpy action make Netflix’s Bloodhounds one fun, thrilling ride.

8. Unlock My Boss

ENA’s Unlock My Boss holds a lot of surprises. But the biggest of all is probably how much heart it has. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll gasp. The series mixes drama, comedy, fantasy and mystery into a tight package. And the unexpected bit of heart really holds everything together. Unlock My Boss is really simply just a wonderful treat. Being able to get some deeper discussions behind the bright and fun façade of the story is such an unexpected experience coming into the series. But it is a very welcome one. A perfect ensemble cast and well-written story are held tightly together by the series’ big heart. And ultimately, it succeeds as an enjoyable, emotional and fun ride. A really great way to start off the year with.

7. Taxi Driver 2

The first season of Taxi Driver was my #1 series of 2021. So when news that season 2 was finally coming, I was so excited. Though this season might lack a bit of the cohesiveness and freshness of the first season, it was still one of television’s best of the year. There is definitely a lot of potential for future seasons. SBS has confirmed it has ordered season three. But I think the series definitely needs to add a bit more of the touches that made season one so special. Instead of becoming just “another one of those,” Taxi Driver‘s unique premise really should offer it more opportunity to be much more refreshing. And the biggest part of that is the connection we have to our Rainbow Taxi friends. And in turn, the personal connections they make and the hope they provide to the clients who give them a call. Which ultimately is what will keep anyone coming back for more Taxi Driver, even if it had its faults in this run.

6. Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 delivers a fun 12 episode ride. High-flying action, affecting stories and some great performances from its talented cast; Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 is one of those rare times where a second season not only matches, but surpasses its first. And it is such a welcome and enjoyable surprise. Compared to season one, the series now knows what it wants to be, what kinds of stories to tell and how to effectively execute those stories in a way that results in satisfying and fulfilling conclusions. Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum deservedly lead a strong cast and step into the spotlight that should’ve been theirs the first season to begin with.

5. Crash Course in Romance

tvN’s Crash Course in Romance (일타 스캔들/Ilta Scandal) is an unexpectedly delightful, dramatic, but sincere series. Led by excellent performances from Jeon Do Yeon and Jung Kyung Ho, Crash Course in Romance takes a refreshingly bold approach to familiar stories. And it does so in a way that is both emotionally affecting and fun to watch. Its excellent balance of tone immerses you into a fully realized world of character-driven real-life stories.

>>Click here for my Good Ol’ Review of Crash Course in Romance

4. The Glory

The Glory is a school violence and revenge plot on the surface. But its most affecting moments involved the simple connections and bonds one is able to make with another. Those relationships are what can help get them through difficult journeys. Those friendships can help guide them toward the light at the end of the tunnel. And those bonds provide the hope to keep one moving toward healing and peace. Song Hye Kyo’s incredible performance proved critics of her acting wrong and very much bolstered what was an already strong series to begin with.

3. Moving

Disney+ has had a couple of original Korean drama offerings so far. But Moving just might be their best yet. This webtoon adaptation from artist and screenwriter Kang Full is a thrilling, imaginative and emotionally affecting series that boasts an incredible ensemble cast and stunning direction. The twenty episode series moves at such a brisk pace. But not in a way that prevents you from absorbing and savoring each of its story and character beats. That is something not every series is able to do. But Moving does that and then some. It’s hard not to feel a wide range of emotions while watching the series. It is most certainly a wild and crazy ride. But one that is fun and emotionally affecting. A legitimately thrilling and captivating story that works both as a high-concept action thriller and a humble, slice of life portrait of parents and children. And a little bit of social commentary too.

2. The Good Bad Mother

I challenge anyone to not shed some tears at least once during the series’ excellent 14 episodes. And that’s tears from the series’ many emotional stories or from laughing so much at its welcome and well-placed humor. Ra Mi Ran and Lee Do Hyun deliver masterful and captivating performances, leading a strong ensemble cast as they help bring to life a truly breathtaking and beautiful story. It is not often you can come across a series like The Good Bad Mother. Having all its pieces come together for an engaging experience, getting you to feel all the different emotions through both refreshing and familiar stories; it really is a major accomplishment. A perfect ensemble cast, pitch perfect writing and directing and a warmth and sincerity not often seen in a television drama; The Good Bad Mother has it all.

1. D.P. 2

Season 2 of Netflix’s D.P. picks up right where the first left off. And that’s not merely referring to the story itself, but also to the incredible performances, top-notch production and captivating, compassionate writing. Just like the first season, Jung Hae In and Koo Kyo Hwan deliver masterful, nuanced performances as they help bring to life the story of two military police officers tasked with pursuing deserters and in turn hoping to fight the injustices in a system that seems to be untouchable. The profound stories it has been able to tell and bring to light will continue to resonate after the final credits roll.

My Top 16 Favorite OSTs of 2023

$

“Perfect,” “encapsulate,” “capture,” “evoke”; I’ll use those words a lot here. But it really is those things that make a song well-suited to be part of a TV or film soundtrack. Here are 16 of my favorite OSTs of 2023!

16. “Never Ending Story” by Kim Min Seok from A Time Called You

“Never Ending Story” is one of the most enduring and timeless songs from the legendary Boohwal. Like most of Boohwal’s songs, it is the perfect encapsulation of the time it was originally released in. So of course it was the perfect song to center the drama A Time Called You around. MeloMance’s Kim Min Seok offers up his excellent vocals to give a fresh take on the emotional track, fitting perfectly with the drama’s emotional roller coaster of a ride.

15. “Wind” by Chimon Wachirawit from Dangerous Romance

It was wonderful to get to watch Chimon Wachirawit with his first lead role in the series Dangerous Romance. A well-deserved opportunity and a long time coming as well. The series’ theme song “Wind” is performed by him. And Chimon’s soft vocals are perfect for the sweet and sincere track.

14. “Let’s Try” by Khaotung Thanawat from Only Friends

Khaotung Thanawat’s “Let’s Try” is the perfect song to represent GMMTV’s Only Friends. Khaotung’s vocals kicking in at the end of every episode was the perfect way to have you cool down and absorb the hot, wild and fun soapy mischief the boys of Only Friends delivered that week. And it’s a song that evokes a sort of exciting freedom you could experience with that special someone.

13. “Living For You” by Phuwin from Never Let Me Go

Rounding out this Thai trio is “Living For You” by Phuwin. All three tracks are great, but I guess I’ve been with “Living For You” a bit longer as it served as the theme song to Never Let Me Go which aired earlier this year. The sweet track captures the dramatic, though ultimately sweet journey of the series’ main characters played by Phuwin and Pond.

12. “Nobody is Perfect” by Mckdaddy from Unlock My Boss

Unlock My Boss is one of my favorite dramas of the year. And “Nobody is Perfect” by Mckdaddy played a big part in it. Once the bouncy, energetic track starts playing in an episode, you know things are about to get exciting. And the song matched the series’ escalating action.

11. “Everything is Magic” by New Thitipoom from Cherry Magic

Episode 2 of Cherry Magic Thailand definitely continued the great vibes of the premiere. And that continues with the full release of the series’ next OST, “Everything is Magic”. The song is even more special as it is New’s first ever solo OST. And it perfectly captures the sweet and wholesome vibes of the series as well.

10. “Hindi Tayo Pwede” by Katrina Velarde from Minsan Pa Natin Hagkan Ang Nakaraan

I only got a chance to watch a few episodes of VIVA’s TV5 teleserye Minsan Pa Natin Hagkan Ang Nakaraan, but the stunning theme song definitely made an immediate impact. Katrina Velarde’s version of “Hindi Tayo Pwede,” originally by The Juans, is just amazing. Her powerful vocals are unmistakable. And the song evokes both the romance and pain of the series’ main characters played by Christine Reyes and Marco Gumabao.

9. “Lie to Me” by Sion from Unlock My Boss

If Mckdaddy’s “Nobody is Perfect” supported Unlock My Boss‘ rising action, Sion’s “Lie to Me” captured the series’ more emotional and heartbreaking moments. The series was able to balance the action, drama, comedy and heartfelt stories in such a great way. And “Lie to Me” was perfect in supporting those quieter, more introspective moments.

8. “Kung Ang Puso” by Zephanie from Lovers & Liars

I have no idea why GMA Network and Regal Entertainment have not released the full version of “Kung Ang Puso,” the theme song to the series Lovers & Liars. I only just learned that the song is a remake of a track by band Unit 406. And their original version is that perfect OPM rock ballad that also could suit the teleserye as well, no question.

But when I first heard a snippet of the track in a promo for the teleserye, I was blown away. And then I was annoyed that there was no full version of it anywhere except for this ripped version by a kind YouTuber from a recent episode. But based on the “music video” (that isn’t) released by GMA above, it’s definitely not the full song. Absolutely crazy because the song is breathtaking.

I haven’t really listened to Zephanie’s music and only seen a few performances of hers. But Zephanie’s powerful performance here really adds that extra dramatic flair that, if we got the full version of, could easily match the grand, all-time teleserye theme songs of the past. The type of song that outlives the series for which it was part of the soundtrack. One that could stand on its own for a long time into the future. Paging GMA Network and Regal Entertainment!

7. “Love You Again” by MeloMance from The Good Bad Mother

The Good Bad Mother is a beautifully emotional series. And MeloMance’s “Love You Again” is the perfect soundtrack to the heartbreaking and emotional story of Lee Do Hyun and Ahn Eun Jin’s Kang Ho and Mi Joo. Capturing the youthful hope of love and the harsh realities of the everyday world that could come to hurt it; really a wonderful track from an excellent series.

6. “Let Me Go” by Jemma from Oasis

Oasis was a flawed series, but a dramatic and affecting series nonetheless. That’s thanks in part to the excellent cast as well as its great soundtrack. I’ve used “perfect” a lot with these song blurbs. But I guess that’s what makes a good soundtrack song. Set amidst the tumultuous backdrop of 1980s Korea, “Let Me Go” by Jemma perfectly captures the heavy emotions of the series and its main characters.

5. “Dreaming of You” by Wanna from His Man Season 2

Season 2 of Korean reality dating show His Man was such a pleasant surprise. And even more so is the OST “Dreaming of You” by Wanna. The bright, romantic song is such a feel-good track and, yes, perfectly captures a few of the sweet relationships that end up forming on the series.

4. “We Are Still” by Primary, Meego from D.P. 2

Primary and Meego delivered the stunningly haunting “Tell a Lie” in the first season of D.P.. And they return for season two with the equally affecting “We Are Still”. An absolutely breathtaking track, evoking the difficult emotions that are part of the stories told in the excellent series. The song definitely hits hard when you listen to it. And rightly so.

3. “Change My Future” by Koda Kumi from Kamen Rider Geats x Revice: Movie Battle Royale

It’s interesting how my favorite things to come out of both Kamen Rider Geats and Kamen Rider Revice are the ending themes of their movies and specials. Both seasons have produced some amazing music. And the latest (last?) from these two seasons is Koda Kumi’s “Change My Future”. Though it is the OST from the Movie Wars, I first heard the track at the end of the final episode of Geats and was immediately blown away. What a beautiful and emotional song, I thought. It absolutely did not match the series that had just concluded, but I loved the song nonetheless. Lol. I only recently watched the movie and the song fits a bit better with it. But the song is so good, it really almost redeemed the entire season for me! Almost.

2. “Loudest Love” by Tay Tawan, New Thitipoom from Cherry Magic

I can’t say enough great things about the Thai adaptation of Cherry Magic so far. The three episodes have been wonderful. And then there’s the amazing theme song performed by Tay and New. “Loudest Love” is just the most feel-good song you will enjoy all year. If it were released earlier, it would’ve made my favorite songs list overall. A fun, sweet and warm track that is so well-suited to Tay and New and to the series’ wholesome vibes. It’s certainly going to be on repeat for me well into the next year.

1. “Alright” by Ha Hyun Sang from Crash Course in Romance

Just transferring over what I said about “Alright” in my Top 50 list. But really, this track from the soundtrack of tvN drama series Crash Course in Romance (일타 스캔들) is just beautiful. Ha Hyunsang’s soft, yet powerful vocals glide across this emotional British rock track. Just a dreamy and romantic song that sweeps you away into your own K-drama-worthy world. It’s been on my repeat playlist all year. And certainly my favorite OST of 2023.

My 2023 K-Drama All-Stars

Last year, I decided to put together my K-Drama All-Stars list. That is, actors who I might have seen the most in my drama watching during the year. Though I watched less Korean dramas in 2023, I wanted to single out these performances as my favorites from the year!

Ra Mi Ran & Lee Do Hyun

Ra Mi Ran and Lee Do Hyun deliver breathtaking performances in The Good Bad Mother. Both are tasked with such varied material, that it would be a challenge for any actor. But both are able to handle that challenge effortlessly. The mix of emotions that these two experienced actors can make you, the audience feel should be part of a masterclass in acting. You hang onto their every word and every expression. Just in awe of what they are able to bring to life with every scene. And they very much helped make The Good Bad Mother one of the very best series of the year.

Lee Dong Wook & Kim Bum

For viewers who have watched the first season of Tale of the Nine Tailed, the scenes are amusingly nostalgic and fun. But also a reminder of how much Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum’s chemistry and performances truly carried the series back then. That chemistry, charisma and magnetic performance from both of them is once again present here. And that bromance, brotherly connection, whatever you want to call it; that relatable and down to earth human story between Lee Yeon and Lee Rang, working out their differences and painful past, is done so well and is truly a highlight in the series. This season gives them more opportunity to shine and they absolutely take advantage of that chance.

Jung Hae In & Koo Kyo Hwan

D.P.‘s ultimate success is in being able to tell the diverse stories of people affected by Korea’s mandatory military service while never losing focus on our protagonists Jun Ho and Ho Yeol. Their own journeys never take a backseat to anything else. And both sides of the series’ narrative work hand in hand in ways you don’t often see in a drama series. Jung Hae In and Koo Kyo Hwan once again deliver incredible performances that truly elevate the series.

Bae Na Ra

Also from D.P. 2, Bae Na Ra delivers an absolutely captivating performance as Seong Min. Episode 3, where his story is featured, is a breathtaking and heartbreaking episode. And really one of the series’ very best. Bae Na Ra is also in the series Evilive, which I have not gotten a chance to watch yet. But he showed here in D.P. 2 that he is one actor to keep an eye on.

Shin Jae Ha

Shin Jae Ha is an amazing actor. And he was able to elevate material of varied quality in both Crash Course in Romance and Taxi Driver 2. In both series, he was tasked with playing initially innocuous characters who end up turning into much darker individuals. He is able to master that delicate balance to deliver enjoyable, entertaining and engrossing performances. Performances that also prove he is more than deserving of bigger and better roles.

Song Hye Kyo

Song Hye Kyo especially delivered a quiet tour de force performance. That is, Moon Dong Eun may not have had the huge emotional moments or outbursts that one might come to expect in a story about revenge. But the character exuded a quiet resilience with a mix of both confidence and vulnerability. Song Hye Kyo skillfully navigated this challenging material with the necessary nuance that she has not had the opportunity for in years. It is not so much a revelation, considering she has had some excellent performances during her career already. But perhaps it is a reminder that Song Hye Kyo can definitely deliver. And she did that and then some.

Kang You Seok

I first got to know of Kang You Seok with the wonderful series Light on Me. He was able to deliver in two major roles this year. First as Jang Tae Chun in Payback, he must be able to keep up with an experienced and veteran cast. And he absolutely did that. Quite effortlessly too. He more than proves his worth and with this performance, makes a clear case for even bigger and better roles in the future.

And his role in Black Knight was certainly that. Kang You Seok is very much the heart of the story. As Sa Wol, he has this great youthful energy and sincere vibe that makes the character immediately endearing. Sa Wol emerges as an important piece in the series’ central conflict. And Kang Yoo Seok’s charm and charisma help to really move the story forward while forging such strong chemistry with Kim Woo Bin and Esom. That chemistry provides the series’ strongest character moments, that again are so welcome.

Looking forward to seeing what he has in store next!

Lee Je Hoon

The ever charismatic and badass Lee Je Hoon had no problem delivering in the second season of Taxi Driver. Being able to don any disguise and slip into so many different characters while never forgetting Do Ki is definitely a big accomplishment that not many actors would be able to do. The fact that he was able to deliver a similar and impactful guest starring role in Big Bet is just testament to Lee Je Hoon as an actor.

Kim So Yeon

The entire cast of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 deserve their kudos. But Kim So Yeon’s performance in the series as well as her impactful guest role on Taxi Driver 2. As Hong Joo in Tale of the Nine Tailed, Kim So Yeon called upon her memorable performance in Penthouse. But she was able to take that fun, expressive and over the top flair to match with some sincerely emotional and deep moments as well. And pairing it with her badass guest role on Taxi Driver 2, Kim So Yeon was able to remind everyone of her versatility. And that she isn’t simply just Cheon Seo Jin.

Jeon Do Yeon

Jeon Do Yeon hit two home runs this year with Crash Course in Romance and the movie Kill Boksoon. In Crash Course in Romance, she led an excellent cast that came together in a way not often seen on Korean drama. And her pairing with Jung Kyung Ho is one of the best romantic chemistry you’ll see. Meanwhile, she was absolutely captivating as she kicked ass in Kill Boksoon. Jeon Do Yeon’s performance grabs you and never lets go until the very last seconds. Her chemistry with both Kim Si Ah and Sol Kyung Gu are the main drivers of the story development as you hang on every moment the characters share with each other.

My 2023 K-Drama All-Stars (Ensemble Cast)

This year, I decided to single out some wonderful ensemble performances in Korean drama from 2023. Sometimes it takes an entire cast to come together to help make a show so good, or even elevate a show beyond what it would otherwise end up being.

Cast of Moving

Disney+’s Moving is absolutely one of the best K-dramas of the year. And a big part of that is its amazing ensemble and truly all-star cast. Seasoned veterans like Ryu Seung Ryong, Han Hyo Joo, Zo In Sung, Kim Sung Kyun, Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Hee Won lead an incredible ensemble cast. That includes young talented actors like Lee Jung Ha, Go Youn Jung and Kim Ho Doon who immediately endear you to their characters. And that goes a long way to quickly establish a connection with them and the world that is being introduced. The vibrant world that the series builds is full of interesting and endearing supporting characters as well. Some who you would never expect to gravitate toward by the end of the series. And it’s all thanks to the perfect pairing of writing and performances from this cast.

Cast of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938

I singled out Lee Dong Wook and Kim Bum for their excellent performances as the angsty brothers of the series. But they also lead a strong ensemble that features a wide array of fun and interesting characters. Season one veterans Hwang Hee, Kim Yong Ji, Kim Soo Jin, Kim Jung Nan and Ahn Kil Kang return and easily pick up where they left off with their playful banter and chemistry. But Kim So Yeon and Ryoo Kung Soo are a big part of this season’s central plot. And that is the childhood friendship between Lee Yeon, Hong Joo and Mu Young.

The nostalgia of childhood friendship and bonds is told with such care and attention that it is not hard to connect with the story. And the performances and chemistry of Lee Dong Wook, Kim So Yeon and Ryu Kyung Soo (as well as the young actors portraying the younger versions of the characters) really go a long way to make their intricate and colorful story truly come alive. It is a wild ride throughout the twelve episodes for them. But it all leads to some wonderfully satisfying and sincere moments.

Cast of Taxi Driver 2

With a procedural series like Taxi Driver, the cases of the week sometimes live and die with the performances of the guest cast who are part of those stories. Thankfully, Taxi Driver has had some great guest actors who help to bring those weekly stories to life. But it our Rainbow Taxi friends played by Lee Je Hoon, Kim Wui Sang, Pyo Ye Jin, Jang Hyuk Jin and Bae Yoo Ram who are always the highlights. Their chemistry is a big part of what makes the series so fun and enjoyable to watch. And they delivered once again with season 2. Meanwhile, Shin Jae Ha was able to effortlessly fit in with the core group and then flip the switch halfway through when all things were revealed. Just an excellent cast that helped to elevate an already solid series.

Cast of Oasis

KBS’ Oasis got off to a strong start, but by the end I felt like they left a lot of story potential on the table. Nonetheless, the strong cast led by Jang Dong Yoon, Seol In Ah and Choo Yeong Woo helped to elevate the flawed, but still engaging series. The three talented young actors along with a cast full of drama veterans including Kim Myung Soo as the emotionally tortured father of Jang Dong Yoon’s Doo Hak and the always charismatic Jin Yi Han as the dangerous right-hand man Oh Man Ok.

Their performances throughout the series are what make its final episode work. One particularly stunning sequence in the finale and the incredible performances that were part of it are worth the price of admission to Oasis. They make your investment in the 16 episodes worth it. Just truly amazing performances in that final sequence and final episode that really carry the series to what is a reasonably satisfying and breathless conclusion.

Cast of Strong Girl Nam Soon

Strong Girl Nam Soon may not have gotten everything right. But one thing they did get right was its cast. When you say “ensemble,” look no further than the cast of this series. Breakout actress Lee Yoo Mi is joined by K-drama icons Kim Jung Eun and Kim Hae Sook as well as Ong Seong Wu, Lee Seung Joon, Han Sang Jo and Kim Ki Doo. Guest actors such as Seo Yi Soo and Ahn Tae Rin who play younger Nam Soon as well as Mongolian actors Tserenbold Tsegmid and Batsumiya Batdorj add some wonderful heart to the sometimes wild and crazy shenanigans. And a large supporting cast help to fill out the colorful world of this unique family. But it is Byeon Woo Seok’s villainous turn that is a standout from this full cast. And together, the cast helps to do the heavy lifting, pun intended, to make up for the series’ shortcomings and ultimately make it a fun ride.

Happy New Year!

Commentary: Eat Bulaga/Tahanang Pinakamasaya – NOW, Can Everyone Move On?

$

I feel like a good rant this Friday evening (Saturday noontime, Philippine time).

I posted back in December that it was time to move on from the Eat Bulaga drama.

I closed out my post back then by saying:

And maybe more importantly, for everyone, getting people to shut up about the issue and drama once and for all. Stamping out the vitriolic nonsense and sanctimonious overtures. And finally allowing everyone to move on and get back to the simple idea of letting people watch and enjoy what they want to without being attacked or judged. Simply because of two simple words.

Now that the title of Eat Bulaga (with or without ellipsis) is officially in the hands of the people hosting the show that airs on TV5 (and CNN Philippines lol) and the TAPE Inc-produced show on GMA Network has adopted its tagline Tahanang Pinakamasaya as its new title, I think now really is the time for everyone to move on.

It’s been unbelievable how this Philippine Noontime Tumult™ has devolved so much, especially in the last month or so. Which is the reason for my initial December post wishing for everyone to just shut up and move on.

I think what triggered me back then was seeing the disgusting vitriol being hurled at Rochelle Pangilinan after her appearances on the TAPE-produced Eat Bulaga. Of course, she got her showbiz start on the show. And apparently for some people, she should’ve packed her bags and followed Tito, Vic and Joey to TV5 or something.

The comments that littered her social media after those appearances by, I am assuming, rabid fans of TVJ and Original Bulaga were so horrible and vitriolic. And it really made me think about how crazy some people might be. Though it really shouldn’t have been a surprise considering the kind of rabid insanity that permeates fandoms and idolatry in Philippine entertainment. Partly cultivated by Network War Culture™.

Those vitriolic comments extended to other hosts and guests of TAPE’s Bulaga. You couldn’t go onto TAPE’s livestreams or social media without seeing people spamming their comments with nonsense. Whether it was comments bashing TAPE or the show itself or the hosts. Or worse, ridiculing innocent bystanders merely watching the show. Perhaps hoping to be able to scan the QR code or just simply wanting to enjoy mindless noontime entertainments.

My immediate though would always be, “Why aren’t you all just watching E.A.T on TVJ and TV5’s accounts instead of wasting your time on a show (TAPE’s Eat Bulaga) you think is garbage?” Why would people waste their time and mobile data on spamming the comments section of TAPE Inc’s livestream? And worse, exhibit such trash behavior as hurling derogatory comments at hosts, guests and home viewers.

Now, there are definitely some TAPE-supporters who dish out harsh comments as well. But does anyone seriously believe TAPE Bulaga has very many rabid fans who would waste time being online keyboard warriors? Come on now. Let’s be real here.

The now-Tahanang Pinakamasaya‘s audience is more than likely just fans of any of the hosts or everyday Filipinos hoping to get lucky scanning QR codes. And hopefully there are also people who simply want to watch something they think is entertaining.

So then why are those people also getting hit with vitriolic nonsense. Innocent bystanders also having to wade through outrageous ridicule and comments.

It would be fine if you could try and block all of that toxicity. But that seems like a futile endeavor. Hate and bash TPTB all you want. By also directing vitriol at fellow Filipinos just watching a TV show? What kind of person are you to get off on having such horrible behavior?

It also makes no sense wishing for the demise of the show either. Personally, I wouldn’t be able to last a few minutes watching It’s Showtime. I’d probably fall asleep or not be able to resist the urge to change the channel. But I would never call for its cancellation. Heck, I disagreed with their suspension a few months ago.

More options will always be better. Not less. Having three noontime shows for Filipino to enjoy is a positive. Not a negative. So why must people be so nasty, negative and toxic?

Network War Culture™ has really done a number on the Filipino population.

But anyway. Now that every noontime show has their own title, my only hope is that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE can finally move on from this unnecessary drama and finally shut the hell up about it.

It is really quite simple. Again, let people watch what they want to watch! Let people enjoy what they want to enjoy. And in peace! 2024 na! Move. On.

Warning: Looooong rant incoming!

Friday evening here in California at 10:32 p.m. Scrolling on Facebook, I saw that the TAPE Inc livestream of Tahanang Pinakamasaya was still on and live. I was surprised since obviously they had gone past the bottom of the hour. So I tapped and tuned in. But what I ended up watching was a big surprise.

All the hosts lined up in front of the audience, some seemingly in tears, as Paolo Contis and Isko Moreno gave what I immediately interpreted as something along the lines of a farewell and thank you speech. They expressed their appreciation to everyone who supported the show, from advertisers to viewers. And they even mentioned how the show’s mission of “tulong at saya” has been ongoing since 1979 when the show was still called Eat Bulaga and all the way through to the present time as Tahanang Pinakamasaya.

Then just as they signed off, the line of hosts, again in tears, took what looked like a final bow.

The first thought that came to my mind was why it seemed like this was a finale episode. Why did it seem like this would be their final show on the air. Noticing them crying and that finale-worthy bow definitely made me believe that yes, this was indeed their final show. But I didn’t think any more of it until a half hour later, after our family had finished watching the live episode of Eat Bulaga (the current one on TV5). When I clicked on over to the official TAPE Inc Facebook page to download the archived livestream in order to watch it on our TV instead, the page was nonexistent. Gone. Red flags definitely went up. And doing more digging, all the other official social media accounts of TAPE Inc had disappeared too.

Of course there had been rumors in the past few weeks that the show was on its last days. But also of course, the media has been fully in lockstep with the so-called “Legit Dabarkads”. So, I didn’t think any of that tsismis either. I just brushed it off as typical nonsense and part of the incessant smear campaigns by the tsismis media against Tahanang Pinakamasaya and TAPE Inc. Of which, there had been plenty since June of last year.

But more and more information started trickling out of APT Studios, including videos after the show went off the air for the day. Hosts and crew all in tears, hugging each other as if it were their last goodbyes. Though as of this posting, there is no official statement yet by TAPE Inc or GMA Network, which had been promised for Monday, it seems pretty obvious that yes indeed, that was the last live show of Tahanang Pinakamasaya.

It’s quite a shame because my family actually very much enjoyed the show. Our household was firmly a Wowowin et al household. But we also started watching Eat Bulaga primarly for their Juan For All, All For One and Sugod Bahay segment. That would be a year or so before the AlDub phenomenon took over the world. And since then, we’d continue watching Eat Bulaga as well as Wowowin for our daily variety game show habit.

But after the drama of last year, we stuck with the TAPE Inc-produced show airing on GMA Network. Especially in the month the “Legit Dabarkads” were off the air. The title of this show on GMA was Eat Bulaga. But of course, it was now with a bunch of different hosts. Similar, though different segments and games. But it was all in all typical noontime fare.

The first couple of weeks were definitely rough. The seeming mismash of hosts GMA Network provided to the TAPE Inc-produced show seemed like the most random and oddest mix of people you’d see on TV. But in the months to come, the hosts would end up forging quite a very good chemistry. And it was very obvious both on and off screem.

Though they may have been brought together through difficult circumstances, perhaps it is them having to face some of the harsh vitriol online that brought them together quickly.

The hosts would put on a brave face and helped to steer the TAPE Inc-produced show towards something that absolutely could go tow-to-tow with its noontime competitors.

The show also somehow endeared these hosts to us in a way they never did before. We’ve liked Buboy Villar since he was a contestant on ABS-CBN’s Little Big Star. We were rooting for Winwyn Marquez on Bb. Pilipinas and then was happy she went on to win Reina Hispanoamericana. We’ve seen a few soap operas of Glaiza de Castro. But the likes of Paolo Contis or Betong Sumaya or Chariz Solomon or Arra San Agustin or Kokoy De Santos or Michael Sager or the Legaspi Twins or Kimpoy Feliciano or Alexa Miro or Yasser Marta never entertained us or even caught our attention before. Isko Moreno was definitely not my family’s presidential choice. But by now, our family has ended up enjoying and liking these personalities and encouraged us to check out their work outside Tahanang Pinakamasaya. Even Bianca Umali, whose off-screen antics are what I know her most for, left a positive impression during her recent run on the show too.

Of course everyone has their own tastes and preferences. And people should be able to freely choose between It’s Showtime or Eat Bulaga or Tahanang Pinakamasaya. I have always hoped and advocated for more options on Philippine television. I’ve certainly posted a lot about it here on DryedMangoez.com.

But the fact that consolidation continues to happen in the Philippine entertainment industry does not help anyone at all except rich fat cats wanting to get richer.

So Tahanang Pinakamasaya being no more is a loss. Thus returning noontime to only two major, mainstream options. Though the ratings for both remaining noontime programs have declined very much in the last few years, it is still a pretty important timeslot on Philippine television. Our family enjoyed watching both Eat Bulaga and Tahanang Pinakamasaya here in California. But we don’t subscribe to GMA Pinoy TV or TFC. And we can’t even subscribe to TV5’s Kapatid Channel even if we wanted to.

So our family relied on unblocked online livestreams on the official Facebook or YouTube pages of both programs. And we would end up always having something to watch whenever we need something on the TV. Perhaps at lunch or dinner or just free time for relaxation. Simple, easy, mindless fun. With also the possibility of emotional tears when we see everyday Filipinos grateful and feeling blessed for receiving even the littlest bit of help from these shows.

But what probably annoys me the most in these last few days and has been annoying me over this last year is how Filipino television fans repeatedly show that the most toxic Filipino trait is that of Schadenfreude. For some reason, Filipinos (and I will speak specifically to blind loyalty fans of ABS-CBN or GMA or “Legit Dabarkads”) continue to cheer for and celebrate the failure of others. And I feel like it is really some of the most disgusting kind of behavior. What do you get out of celebrating the failure and humiliation of others?

I have been very consistent and saying that there should be more options and choices for Filipino viewers. Whether that be on television or online through streaming.

When ABS-CBN lost their franchise (and again, it was not a “shutdown”) and lost their free, OTA television frequency, I was shocked. Because I never thought it would happen. I thought that they would of course find a way to remain on the air as an independent network. Now, I’m no fan of ABS-CBN. Once upon a time, yes. In fact, I was also a blind loyalist in another life. But never did I celebrate what happened after the loss of franchise. I was actually confused because why would anyone want to limit options for Filipino people. And this is for everyday Filipino people. Because you and I both know that the people watching television every day are everyday Filipinos who are not so well off that they can subscribe to all the random streaming services online to watch foreign television programs or movies. The main source of entertainment and news for Filipinos across the country will be free, OTA television.

So ABS-CBN getting yanked off free TV was not something to be celebrated. Kapuso fans celebrating the fact that GMA would now have a monopoly on local television should not have been happy at all.

Let’s take it on the flip side as well. Kapamilya fans ridiculing and hoping for or wishing GMA programs get canceled and yanked off the air or rooting for GMA shows to fail miserably. That’s also horrible behavior as well. Again, what do you get out of reveling in the failure of others. Not only that, but wishing for the most horrible of outcomes just because of your blind loyalty to a network or celebrity? For a country that is so religious, the idolatry of networks and celebrities is baffling.

Which brings us back to our earlier discussion which is the ending of Tahanang Pinakamasaya. What did (and I will be blunt and direct here)… What did “Legit Dabarkads” and TVJ fans get out of hoping for Tahanang Pinakamasaya to fail and be yanked off the air? What do you all get from hoping the show gets canceled? If you hate it so much, then just ignore it. Is it that hard? Is it really that hard to just ignore something that you dislike or hate so much that you wish for it to fail and get thrown in the trash?

Every day during the Facebook or YouTube livestream, you would regularly see fans of “Legit Dabarkads” in the comments section posting trolling and even hateful comments. Instead of watching Eat Bulaga on TV5, they were watching Tahanang Pinakamasaya in order to post things like “TVJ EAT BULAGA #1” or “Tahanang Pinasara sana!”

What was wrong with those people? It is not hard to just ignore something you don’t like. And instead of supporting the show that they do like, they make the effort to post trolling and bashing comments on another show’s livestream. You’d see people commenting “There are so little views on this video”. Well, there would be even lower viewers if you weren’t there adding to the count. Wouldn’t lower view counts actually make these trolls happier? What is this paradox?

No one was holding a gun to your head and forcing you to watch GMA Network at 12 noon. Even moreso, no one was controlling your cell phone or device and only showing you a livestream of Tahanang Pinakamasaya. If you want to watch Eat Bulaga on TV5 or It’s Showtime on its SEVERAL different platforms, no one is stopping you. The existence of Tahanang Pinakamasaya or It’s Showtime is not going to stop you from watching and enjoying Eat Bulaga. And vice versa x2. You are free to watch whatever the hell you want.

So then why must you push for or celebrate cancelling a show. Which in turn costs the jobs of more than 100 people. It makes absolutely no sense. In what world does any of this make sense?

Let’s be absolutely blunt here. A lot of people celebrating the ending of Tahanang Pinakamasaya are fans of TVJ and the “Legit Dabarkads”. Or fans of It’s Showtime wanting the show to move to GMA Network for many different reasons.

Even though TVJ and the “Legit Dabarkads” won their cases and are using the title and have higher ratings than Tahanang Pinakamasaya, fans and even some of the hosts continue to waste their time and energy trying to bring down a show they supposedly hate and don’t care for. If you really don’t care about the show, then leave them alone. Let them be. Let the 5 or 10 people who actually watch the show enjoy it. They’re not hurting you or anyone in doing so.

But no, instead, these people attack the hosts, attack the crew. Not physically of course. Though I wouldn’t put it past anyone in this day and age. But online in these people’s official social media accounts. They harass a little girl who is one of the hosts of the show. They inundate the comments section of anyone who appears as a guest on the show. They even attack people who merely watch the show. Regular Filipino people who watch the show are somehow equated to trash just because they watch a show that you might not particularly like.

Somehow it is okay to shame people who might enjoy Tahanang Pinakamasaya. Somehow it is okay to shame people who are in studio hoping that maybe they can win a few thousand pesos in a game. Somehow it is okay to make fun of people who scan a QR code on screen to enter a drawing. Somehow it is okay to spout vitriol at a seven, eight year old girl. Or direct hateful comments to an actress doing her job and including her family in your nonsensical online trolling.

(And to be very clear again, these two examples are Alyona Baquial and Rochelle Pangilinan. Though there are many other examples of simple guests on Tahanang Pinakamasaya on the receiving end of trash comments online.)

Laughing at and making fun of or celebrating people losing their jobs is such trash behavior. And this applies to lost jobs at Tahanang Pinakamasaya which will no longer be in production. Or ABS-CBN needing to lay off most of their workers because they can’t pay them all. Or TV5 needing to continually downsize because they are always in the red.

But I have noticed that this schadenfreude is a very Filipino trait. You don’t see fans of American television programs celebrating the loss of jobs when a show gets canceled.

And that is because #NetworkWarCulture does not exist anywhere outside of the Philippines.

If anything, who is to blame here? It’s the networks themselves. Specifically ABS-CBN and GMA Network who have cultivated this toxic environment where you must be 100% blindly loyal to either or. A country that promotes needing to stick to one lane and not be able to absorb and enjoy a wide array of entertainment options beyond your chosen Kapuso or Kapmilya team. That is one of the two biggest reasons TV5 has not been able to make a dent in the Philippine entertainment duopoly. (The other of course is reach.)

But the fact that fans of these networks and celebrities will go out of their way to attack other regular Filipinos for simply liking something that they don’t personally care for is incomprehensible. That somehow it is okay for a Kapamilya loyalist to attack a Kapuso loyalist for watching certain shows and vice versa. And then you have both Kapuso and Kapamilya loyalists ridiculing anyone involved with or watch the distant third network TV5 for simply existing.

This kind of toxic mentality is what always turns me off to Philippine entertainment. I think that is part of the reason why I have gravitated to other entertainment options across Asia; whether it is content from Korea and Japan or Thailand and Taiwan. The toxicity of Philippine entertainment and its fan culture is the biggest “ick” you could think of. Of course people are going to go elsewhere.

If you click through my previous posts about Network War Culture, and it’s not just about the recent noontime tumult, but many topics in years passed, I have always talked about the double standards and toxic fandom culture of the Philippines. It is quite unique and incomprehensible. The need to put down and drag down other people, other shows and other Filipinos just because they are on another network team than you. It’s mind-blowing.

And it is that kind of vitriolic and toxic behavior that once again flooded the internet over the weekend.

Never believe if somebody says “Oh this side is worse than the other” or “It’s only that side doing it, not us.” Nope. It is universal. I don’t care if you’re a Kapamilya fan or Kapuso fan or Kapatid fan or Showtime fan or Eat Bulaga fan or TAPE Inc. fan. Whatever you are a fan of, you will always have a huge chunk of people who have nothing better to do with their lives but to try and bring other people down. It is very sad that this is a very Filipino trait. It’s embarrassing.

Yes, Ninoy Aquino International Airport being infested with rats and cockroaches and bed bugs is an embarrassment. Airport employees planting bullets in passengers bags (my own Grandma being a victim of this in the past) is an international embarrassment. But so is the kind of toxic mentality in Network War Culture which is 365 days of the year. (366 this year.)

You can fumigate the airport. You can fire the people planting bullets on people. But what can be done about the toxic mentality that has been instilled in the Filipino people over the last 20 years. There is no cure or therapy or medicine or vaccine or insecticide for the vitriolic, toxic and hateful behavior that has been fueled by Network War Culture.

When ABS-CBN and TV5 started a partnership and when ABS-CBN and GMA co-produced a program, everyone said “Oh, network wars are over.” In fact, the CEO of GMA Network himself said that network wars were over. And yet, his own network continues to post ratings art cards bragging about GMA Network getting 10x the ratings of an ABS-CBN program that airs on a channel that doesn’t even reach half of the same audience as GMA.

If network war is truly over, then why the need to still brag about ratings? When in fact, the public doesn’t need to know the ratings at all. The ratings are used for you to give to your advertisers in order to set ad rates. So there is really no reason for networks to continue posting bragging social media posts about ratings unless it is to continue to fuel the dumpster fire flames of Network War Culture.

Network War is Over? No it’s not. It is alive and well. And when I say Network War Culture, that also applies to something as innocuous as noontime shows. The same attitude that permeates Network War Culture is exactly what fuels the needless vitriol that gets hurled between fans of Eat Bulaga and Tahanang Pinakamasaya and yes, I’ll throw in It’s Showtime too.

Again, it is as simple as allowing Filipinos to watch whatever the hell they want. Period. End of story. You have no right to dictate what other people can or will watch. Wishing for the cancellation of a show just because you don’t like it, thus depriving other people from watching that show; you have zero right. What gives you the right to want to make it happen? It’s that kind of thinking that stems from Network War Culture that will be difficult to remove and eradicate from Filipino life.

Competition is good when it is healthy. But instead of Network Wars being something that pushes and drives these networks to be better, it merely feeds and fuels the division and unnecessary toxicity between Filipinos. That has ultimately extended beyond television and into other aspects of Filipino life. Whether it is politics or business or even barangay squabbles, it is not healthy competition. It is a destroy and conquer mentality. You want to eliminate the competition instead of helping to foster a vibrant and diverse array of options for Filipinos.

When you hear people in the industry saying “Oh, it’s a new era. Now everyone from any network can collaborate blah blah.” No, they are just paying lip service and trying to hide what you and your networks continue to push. And that is the toxic and vitriolic behavior which has fueled the kind of disgusting commentary that was seen this past weekend celebrating more than 100 crew members losing their livelihoods.

That was not karma. Because if there really is karma at play here, then every single person who decides to spend and exert so much energy and effort in trying to bring down and break down a competitor or something they don’t like… well, they would be the ones facing karma today. Yet they don’t.

One funny, but true line/joke that used to be uttered on Eat Bulaga years ago when it was still on GMA with the “Legit Dabarkads” (repeatedly until it was beaten to death and became annoying) was “This is a free country, you can do what you want.”

Yes. the Philippines is indeed a free country. Filipinos can post and tweet whatever they want about anything they want. Positive or negative things about celebrities, politicians, public figures or even the president. You are able to say whatever the hell you want online. But just because you can doesn’t mean you shoud.

GMA Network had a “Think Before You Click” campaign years ago. And yet it is them and ABS-CBN and other networks who almost encourage you to post negative comments about competitors.

So really, the only chance for any of this to even begin to change for the Filipino people and the Filipino viewing audience is if one person stops and thinks before posting online. Or stops and thinks before getting into online fights with other people. Think before getting into an argument with someone for watching a show you don’t particularly want to watch. Stop from posting a negative comment toward an actress merely appearing on Tahanang Pinakamasaya as a guest judge before proceeding to attack her family and children. For example.

If one person can do it, then maybe two more can do it the next time. Or five people after that. And more and more people, hopefully, will think better than to add to the toxicity of the world today. Television and entertainment is supposed to make people happy. It is not something that is supposed to encourage you to attack your fellow Filipino.

Because let’s be real here. Nobody cares if you watch Batang Quiapo or Black Rider. Nobody cares if you choose TV Patrol or Frontline Pilipinas or 24 Oras. Nobody cares if you watch a replay of Darna or Filipino-dubbed movies on TV5.

Watch whatever the hell you fucking want. And if somebody doesn’t want to watch what you want to watch, then let them be. Leave them alone. You do not need to wish them harm and you do not need to wish failure toward shows you don’t want to watch.

Is that so hard?

My goodness. Only in the Philippines. It’s more fun in the Philippines? No, it’s more toxic in the Philippines. At least when it comes to the entertainment industry and Network War Culture. If anyone ever asks why Filipino television programs or movies or music are not able to make a splash worldwide like Korean dramas or Japanese anime or Thai BL dramas, perhaps because of the kind of behavior that is normalized by the local networks via Network War Culture. You want to talk about karma? Perhaps Philippine entertainment trapping itself on the Philippine islands and holding itself back is the true karma. And that will be my quota of schadenfreude for the today.

TL;DR

Let people watch whatever TV show they want to watch in peace. Stop being a troll online. And stop trying to bring other people down.

Shows I’m Looking Forward to From GMMTV2024 UP&ABOVE PART2

I’ve had a lot of fun watching GMMTV’s annual trade launches these last few years. Even though I end up watching maybe one or two shows from the line-ups each year, just watching this big event and seeing all the trailers for upcoming projects is very exciting in and of itself.

This time, GMMTV had so many projects lined up for the next year, they split their trade launch into two events. And Part 2 just took place this week.

So I decided to list the shows that caught my eye and intrigued me the most.

In no particular order:

Perfect10 Liners

I’m interested in this one as its three couples have been part of the few Thai programs I’ve watched recently. I particularly like Perth and Chimon and thought their Dangerous Romance was fine. Chimon was part of the 2nd Thai BL couple I ever followed (PleumChimon/InSun). And I knew Perth from The Stranded. So when they were paired up by GMMTV, I was looking forward to it. So I’m happy to see they have a follow-up project after Dangerous Romance.

Meanwhile, Mark and Junior was a fun and sweet pairing in Cherry Magic. And I’m excited to see them in very different roles here. Force and Book are a pairing I only watched in Only Friends. So of the three, they are the ones I’m least familiar with. But I enjoyed their story on Only Friends.

And altogether, this is a solid trio of GMMTV couples. Seems though like the story will be very familiar. And GMMTV seems to just be sticking all their BL couples into groups just to keep the pairings going without having to give them their own, solo shows. But I think that’s fine. And apparently this series will be divided into three parts, one for each couple. So that will be interesting!

Hide & Sis

Speaking of Chimon, I think he is the reason I might check out Hide & Sis. When the trailer started, I thought this was a Pretty Little Liars remake or something. Lol But it does have similar vibes. And I would love to see Chimon in a darker kind of role. Also looking forward to Jan and Gawin Caskey as well.

The Ex-Morning

Though I’ve never watched SOTUS, I definitely know of Krist and Singto. And since I became a fan of TayNew, I’ve certainly seen a lot of Krist and Singto as well when they along with OffGun were GMMTV’s main BL trio. Knowing though how Singto left GMMTV and there was a lull in Krist/Singto content, I definitely know this reunion is a big deal. I kind of feel like this is how Cherry Magic was for TayNew fans. So I can understand why many people would be excited for this one. And with what little I know of Krist and Singto as a pairing, I can still see the trailer seemed to include some real life details and parallels to the characters. So that should be fun for them to play out. But overall, it will seem to be a nice, lighthearted present for long-time fans of theirs. And could appeal to other viewers as well.

The Dark Dice

A very interesting premise based on the trailer. A bunch of high school students get sucked into a dangerous, weird game. I guess a fantastical version of Squid Game, in a way. That’s the show I can reference for myself. So setting that with high school students would be a great way to touch upon the usual teen angst with some fantasy and high concept drama.

Thame-Po – Heart That Skips a Beat

I’ve sorta followed LYKN and also somehow started following Est Supha after he competed at the Asian Games. So that’s definitely made me interested in this series. But the concept about an idol falling in love with a company employee is definitely an intriguing plot. Korean drama could never! K-pop idols could never in real life! Lol But the trailer showed a sweet story paired with some nice idol/music industry drama as well.

Leap Day

I’ve seen a little of F4 Thailand and I’ve become a fan of Pond and Phuwin. So I’m definitely looking forward to Leap Day. I think the premise seems very interesting. There’s a bit of fantasy or sci-fi angle mixed with more character-driven story. At least in the trailer. And it was a suspenseful trailer at that. Gun also seems poised for a standout performance too. So this one I might definitely check out.

Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist

The fluffiest series of the trade launch was definitely this one. I’m not sure I will be watching. But it caught my attention because of Mark Pakin. I would’ve liked to have seen him and Neo in a new series together after Only Friends. But from what I know of Mark, this is a well-deserved lead role for him.

Friendshit Forever

The title itself should probably intrigue a lot of people enough. Lol But I’m most looking forward to this series for New of course. The story seems like your typical revenge-type story. With a love square or something like that too. So maybe it might be interesting. But I’m not sure.

Ossan’s Love Thailand

I’ve seen and read a lot about Ossan’s Love. But have never watched the Japanese original. I might just go ahead and do that before Thailand’s version airs. Or maybe I should just go in cold with this one. I have not watched anything with Earth and Mix as a couple. But this trailer was fun, funny, over the top and just a good time. I always got the sense the original was like this too. Especially as a Japanese series. So I’m intrigued about how this will turn out. And I think the trailer does a good job of presenting a fun time.

Scarlet Heart Thailand

Speaking of “original”, I might just have to finally watch Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. It’s always been on my long To Watch list. But I’ve never gotten around to it. I definitely know about its ending though as to this day, people are still affected by it.

Apparently this is GMMTV’s most expensive drama ever. And considering the story of the original novel which spawned two adaptations, I can see why. Being a period drama, I am looking forward to seeing historical Thailand and how the show will do that aspect of it. And being a sweeping love story, they definitely have to step it up with how it is filmed.

Very excited to see Tay, Phuwin, Perth and Win in this series. And from what I’ve seen of them, I like Tu, Fourth, Nanon and Force as well. So this great cast with an epic story, GMMTV has a big task ahead of them.

Fan Casting a GMA Network Filipino Adaptation of Korean Drama “Penthouse”

Penthouse Philippines Cast

There’s been some tsismis about the potential of a Philippine adaptation of the blockbuster Korean drama series Penthouse. Everything from it becoming the second GMA Network-ABS-CBN collaboration to Marian Rivera and Heart Evangelista mending their relationship to prepare to star in it.

Being someone who watched and actually enjoyed the insanity that was SBS’ Penthouse, I did wonder who could potentially be cast in this Filipino version.

So I decided for this Filipino Friday, why not go ahead and conjure up my personal picks for a Filipino cast. (Also because I need scheduled posts for DryedMangoez.com while I’m out of the country this month. Lol)

Just to say upfront, this is only casting. Nothing about how the series should actually play out or be written. Should it be a direct translation or actually be adapted to suit Filipino audiences. (Though the original Korean series certainly had all the hallmarks of a Filipino teleserye lol)

And I am also casting this as if it will be a solo GMA Network production. Since it was GMA who bought (and conceivably still have) the rights to the original series. So mostly Kapuso actors with other potential freelancers, etc.

So without further ado, he’s my fancast for #PenthousePH lol (Unpolished graphics included lol)

—-

Penthouse Philippines Cast

For the leading ladies, I thought why not have GMA Network’s biggest leading ladies head up this surely big project. The murmurs of a Marian-Heart series definitely help to build buzz for a series like this. But the only thing that kind of throws a wrench in this plan is both Marian Rivera and Heart Evangelista have basically waved off of heavy drama projects. Both wanting to do maybe more lighthearted roles rather than the screaming and catfights typical of Filipino teleseryes and definitely of Penthouse.

That said, perhaps #PenthousePH could lean into its more campy and outrageous pedigree more. I don’t think anyone is looking for some Academy Award-winning philosophical drama with nuance or depth. People watched Penthouse (and arguably most Filipino teleseryes) to see the over-the-top antics and improbable plot twists.

So maybe that would entice Marian, Heart and a Carla Abellana to accept this project and just have fun with it.

Now, for who’s who. Let’s be blunt here. GMA Network calls Marian Rivera their “Primetime Queen” for a reason. So of course, they would want her to be the headlining star of this series. And Shim Su Ryeon is arguably the main heroine of Penthouse.

I’m pretty set on Heart Evangelista playing Oh Yoon Hee. So it comes down to which role goes to either Marian or Carla. Carla Abellana is definitely a talented actress. And her recent role on Stolen Life showed that she can do kontrabida well.

So I would be confident that she can play Cheon Seo Jin. However, Cheon Seo Jin was arguably the most popular and well-known character of Penthouse Some could argue that she was actually the real star.

I actually might be more confident in seeing Marian Rivera playing Seo Jin instead. She has that fierce aura about her and I think with a campy series like Penthouse, she could have a lot of fun just absolutely playing up Seo Jin’s over the top craziness.

Carla Abellana could then slip into Su Ryeon very easily. And this could also help to have a Marian vs Heart showdown (all in good fun of course) as Seo Jin and Yoon Hee.

But Heart-Marian-Carla?

A perfect trio.

Penthouse Philippines Cast

Now, my one thing about a Marian-Heart-Carla trio is that they seem too young to be parents to high school seniors. Though they’re similar in age to the Korean cast, it still seems a bit awkward. But at the same time, there is a huge level of disbelief suspension needed to watch this show. So their age wouldn’t really matter.

Still, if we were to maybe cast leading ladies who might be more logically parents to high school/college-aged kids, I can think of an amazing trio of actresses. And that would be Judy Ann Santos, Claudine Barretto and Gladys Reyes.

What better way to drum up a lot of buzz and even goodwill than by casting some Filipino TV drama icons. And I believe this would be the first time the three of them would be in a project together?

Again, it’s difficult to see who could play who. You have Gladys Reyes who of course can effortlessly play a kontrabida. But there’s also a fun novelty to have her not typecast here. And also have her basically be best friends with Judy Ann Santos’ character.

That and we would like to see Judy Ann Santos and Claudine Barretto going head to head. Playing up their manufactured professional rivalry to full effect. I’m sure the three of them would love to get the chance to just have fun and go at each other with the series’ outrageous, over-the-top camp.

Again, like with Marian and Carla, I think Judy Ann Santos and Claudine Barretto could swap between Su Ryeon and Seo Jin easily. But I think Judy Ann as Su Ryeon and Claudine as Seo Jin would be the best way to go.

And in recent interviews with Boy Abunda, both Judy Ann and Claudine said they are definitely open to working on GMA.

However, there’s also a third option that could throw the rest of the cast out the window and have us start from scratch. I could see actresses like Sunshine Cruz or Angel Aquino in these roles as well. But as talented and amazing as they are, I don’t know that they’d get the same type of immediate buzz and hype as a Marian-Heart-Carla or Judy-Claudine-Gladys trio would get.

Penthouse Philippines Cast

Now how about their leading men?

I don’t think there’s anyone else who could play Joo Dan Tae than Dennis Trillo. He would absolutely deliver in the role. And the best part is that he has experience already with all three leading ladies in Marian, Heart and Carla. So that is perfect.

For Su Ryeon’s hero Logan Lee, I wasn’t as sure. But I think Benjamin Alves would be a good choice. I feel like his role in Herlene Budol’s Magandang Dilag is basically Logan Lee-lite already. So I guess that’s how he first came to mind for me here.

For Ha Yoon Cheol, I also had a hard time thinking of who could work. But Jericho Rosales suddenly came to mind. I think it’s probably the recent news of him and Heart meeting at some event and them being open to working together. A lot of people reacted very positively to those interactions. So I think it would be great here. Jericho is a freelancer (I think?) under Cornerstone. So being on GMA would be no problem. And he would be good being paired with Heart and either Carla or Marian as well.

Penthouse Philippines Cast

Jericho Rosales would be the same choice for Yoon Cheol with my 2nd group of leading ladies. But we would need two other actors for the other leading men. So I decided to go all in on the nostalgia by casting Diether Ocampo and Piolo Pascual. It’s a very Kapamilya-leaning group. But we want to go all out with this adaptation. And they are basically the fathers and mothers of Filipino soap operas. lol

Again, it’s possible to switch Diether and Piolo between Dan Tae and Logan. But I feel Diether would be a good Dan Tae. He has that charisma that will absolutely fuel the love-to-hate nature of Dan Tae. Piolo, meanwhile, though a bit older than I would think for a Logan Lee, would be good as the knight in shining armor here. And since Logan is a bit of a more limited role, Piolo accepting it might be more possible.

Again, we’re banking on nostalgia, so Diether, Piolo, Jericho, Judy Ann, Claudine and Gladys would be a crazily fun group to watch on primetime TV again.

Other wild card options for the leading men include Adrian Alandy who I think could be any of Dan Tae, Yoon Cheol or Logan Lee. And then there’s Tom Rodriguez. Though if we had to choose between Carla and Tom, I think Carla is the more valuable actor to get for this series. But then again, if you want even more buzz, having Carla and Tom in the same series would definitely generate a lot of it.

Penthouse Philippines Cast

Moving on to the next tier of our cast are the “teens”. The teens of the original Penthouse really got a big boost to their careers thanks to the series. For the Philippine adaptation, I think we should have a combo of both established young stars and up and comers.

Part of my choices here include no-brainers. Specifically actresses I immediately saw in the roles.

I don’t think there’s anyone at GMA who could be Bae Rona other than Jillian Ward. It’s almost like the role was made for her. The kind of inaapi heroine who has moments of fighting back and confidence, but always seems to get one-upped by the kontrabidas. Though ultimately, getting the last laugh of course. That’s basically Jillian Ward’s most popular roles in recent years.

For Yoo Jenny, I immediately thought of Cassy Legaspi. Again, also a role that seems perfectly tailored to her. Her real life personality just fits in this role so well. You can already see her as Jenny Yoo.

Now, from what little I’ve seen of Abot Kamay na Pangarap, Jillian Ward had great chemistry with Jeff Moses. So, I thought why not have them paired up here. However! Penthouse‘s endgame is Rona-Seokhoon. And for Seokhoon, I can’t see anyone in the role other than Michael Sager. Who I even think has a lot of similarities to Kim Yong Dae. And I also think he had a short stint on Aboy Kamay as one of the 24 love interests for Jillian Ward’s character lol

But then, thinking about Cassy Legaspi as Jenny. She and Michael Sager showed they have a lot of chemistry on Tahanang Pinakamasaya. And the little romance Jenny had in the original was with Minhyuk, who I don’t see Michael Sager in the role. But I could see Jeff Moses in it. So basically, I had two couples in mind. But I’ll have to switch partners here. Unless the show moves around the storylines of course lol It definitely doesn’t have to even have any romance if they don’t want to.

But let’s be real. All networks like having a younger loveteam in every single one of their teleseryes. It helps get the fans excited. And primes that loveteam for future build up.

So I would expect #PenthousePH to do a lot more with the teen group. And play up potential romances as much as possible.

Again, GMA could easily switch around couplings and what not. They ruined the Philippine adaptation of Start Up that way. Lol

Anyway. For the other major teen roles, I easily see Kyline Alcantara as Seok Kyung. I think she is being paired up with or is a third wheel to Michael Sager in another Korean adaptation coming soon. But they’ll have to switch up to play twins here on Penthouse later on. Lol

Finally, for Ha Eun Byeol, it’s definitely a difficult role with the character’s mental health struggles and sometimes very over the top moments. This one I wasn’t too sure of as not one single young actress immediately came to mind like it did for the other teen roles. But with Voltes V getting a rerun on GMA now, Ysabel Ortega stood out and I thought, “Sure, she could do well in the role.” She might be a bit older than the rest of the “teen” cast. But that shouldn’t matter.

Penthouse Philippines Cast

After a while, I got kinda bored with my casting session. I actually planned to find a cast for the entire Penthouse cast of characters. But I’ll stop here with the other two couples of Hera Palace Philippines and the dead Min Seol Ah.

First for Min Seol Ah, since it’s basically only a guest role, I thought why not Bianca Umali. I’m sure GMA could also fill the role with maybe a newbie or something. But if we want this adaptation to have all big stars, then Bianca Umali fits the bill. And I think she’d pair well with a Marian Rivera as her mother. Though I’m not so sure with a Judy Ann Santos.

Next, for our money and power-hungry couple, I had no idea at first. But then I thought these actors should be talented in both comedy and drama. Many times, Lee Kyu Jin and Go Sang Ah were the most comic relief of the characters. So that’s when Paolo Contis and Alessandra de Rossi immediately popped into my head.

Now, I definitely think Alessandra de Rossi is far more deserving of a lead role than this simple supporting role. And she’s quite picky with what roles she accepts these days. (And deservedly so! She’s earned that right!) But I think she would easily become the scene stealer of this adaptation as Sang Ah. It’s also a limited role as well, relatively speaking. So maybe she would be open to it.

Then thinking about who could play Kyu Jin, probably one of the more unlikeable characters of the series, I think plenty of people would agree Paolo Contis fits that bill. I personally have no negative opinion of him, but I can understand how others might. But if we’re to talk about who can handle the characters, Paolo Contis can easily play up the spazzy, sleazy Kyu Jin.

And speaking of Tahanang Pinakamasaya, I think Isko Moreno would be a good choice for Kyu Jin too. But then we’d need another actress for Sang Ah.

Chariz Solomon would be a great Sang Ah too if we stick to the TP family.

Finally, for Shin Eun Kyung and Park Ho San, my choices will differ depending on who our lead cast will be.

For the Heart-Marian-Carla trio, I think Gladys Reyes would be perfect as Eun Kyung. Eun Kyung ended up being one of the most well-rounded characters in Penthouse. And I think Gladys would easily deliver with everything the character asks of her. To play Eun Kyung’s gangster husband, we won’t go far. Her husband Christopher Roxas would be fine in the role.

The other option would pair with the Gladys-Judy Ann-Claudine trio. And I think Eugene Domingo would easily fit as Eun Kyung just like Gladys would and for the same reasons. Drama, comedy; she can handle it all. And to pair with her as Ho San, I think Mon Confiado would be a great choice. That initially sketchy character who turns out to be a loving father, but still a criminal.

So, overall, I think a Filipino adaptation of Penthouse would be fun. IF DONE RIGHT. More often than not, Filipino adaptations of foreign series fall flat with only a few exceptions.

But what works in Penthouse‘s favor is that it is really just a typical Filipino teleserye. Outrageous and repetitive plots. Campy and over-the-top acting. Quotable one-liners. But still addictive and fun.

Will #PenthousePH happen? I have no idea. And I’m honestly not that eager to see it become a reality. But for the sake of a DryedMangoez.com Scheduled Post and a quick one-hour of Googling, here we are. lol
